The phenotypic consequences of gene knockdown are analyzed by functional assays. If the function of the gene under investigation is largely or completely unknown, the first tests applied will be rather general in nature, for example, determining if gene knockdown is cytotoxic, induces apoptosis, or influences cell proliferation. If the target cells show specific biochemical features, such as specialized receptors or specific hormones or interleukins, assays can be performed to determine whether these properties are still intact.
