Humans aren't the only mammals giving up certain foods during the Christian time of Lent. In Ethiopia, during the 55 days before Easter, hyenas have been shown to forgo scavenging resorting to more laborious hunting in an effort to adapt to Christian tradition of fasting during Lent.'

Desert Topsoil Degradation May Wreak Environmental Havoc
Desert soil has a living crust essential for fixing nitrogen, a critical plant nutrient, and for avoiding erosion that produces a swirl of itinerant dust. When the fragile crust is damaged, dust storms well up, residents of nearby communities develop hacking coughs, snow melts early, and a whole array of negative consequences result. Jayne Belnap of the U.S. Geological Survey, an expert on biological crusts, says measures, such as restricting off-road vehicles, are needed to protect desert crusts.'
